Requirements
Students are required to pass two years of a foreign language.
Maynard High School offers two world languages: French and Spanish. The goal of these classes is to provide students with opportunities to improve their abilities to communicate with others in our world. Massachusetts state colleges and universities require the successful completion of two years of one foreign language in high school in order to be admitted. Some colleges recommend that students take three years or more. The World Language Department recommends at least a third year (honors level) for highly motivated students who wish to continue the success of the prior two beginning levels.
Students can fulfill the requirements through the following sequences depending on prior knowledge:
Spanish | French |
Spanish I | French I |
Spanish II | French II |
Spanish III (College Prep or Honors) | French III (College Prep or Honors) |
Spanish IV (College Prep or Honors) | French IV (College Prep or Honors) |
AP Spanish Language & Culture | AP French Language & Culture |

UMass Lowell Dual Enrollment offered at MHS |
Students entering MHS who have gone through the Spanish Immersion Program have a few options. If they wish to continue with Spanish, the following explains what they can plan for. The recommendation is for SI students to take Honors Spanish 4 as freshmen. From there, their skills will be assessed and they can either take Honors Spanish 5 or AP Spanish Language & Culture.
Grade 9 - Honors Spanish 4
Grade 10 - AP Spanish Language and Culture
Grade 11 - AP Spanish Literature and Culture
Grade 12 - Dual Enrollment College Courses
Students who have taken both AP Spanish courses by the end of their junior year may take our new UMass Lowell Spanish courses. These college level classes will enable our most advanced Spanish students to continue earning college credit after the Advanced Placement curriculum.
*Students may also wish to begin their studies of French, thereby gaining fluency in a third language.
